Domestic Violence Unit

The Domestic Violence Unit focuses its efforts to protect the rights of victims of domestic violence.  The unit is staffed by three (3) full-time investigators.

Domestic Violence is a problem that affects every community across the nation.  It crosses all races, social and economic backgrounds, cultures, religions and relationship types.  Domestic Violence is a deliberate pattern of abusive tactics used by one partner in an intimate relationship to obtain and maintain power and control over the other person.

Protection Orders

The ONLY people that qualify for a Protection from Abuse Order are:

  • People that are married to each other
  • People that have been married to each other
  • People that have a child in common
  • People that have been in a dating relationship that have had sexual intercourse within the past six (6) months

If you do not meet the criteria listed above, you must get an attorney to request a restraining order.

A Protection from Abuse Order is a court order issued based upon a petition filed under the Protection from Abuse Act (PFA) which provides for limited protection for persons who have been threatened, harassed, or physically abused.

Protection from Abuse Order PDF

Victims who need protection may go to their local Sheriff's Office and request a Petition for a Protection from Abuse Order from Investigations.  Or victims may download the Petition for Protection from Abuse by clicking the above link.  The paperwork must be signed by an investigator at the Sheriff's Office before taking the paperwork to the circuit clerk's office.  You can seek a Protection from Abuse Order only in the county that you are currently a resident of and must seek that order from your county's sheriff's office.

Child Abuse Prevention Month
Navigation - Tap to Expand

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month and throughout the year, the Sheriff's Office encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Etowah County a better place for families. By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse and neglect by strengthening families and communities.

Child Abuse Awareness

Research shows that five important factors are present in healthy families. Promoting these factors is among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. They are:

  • Nurturing and attachment
  • Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development
  • Parental resilience
  • Social connections
  • Concrete supports for parents

For more information about child abuse prevention programs and activities during the month of April and throughout the year, contact Investigator Tracey Bishop or Investigator Carla Carroll at 256-546-2825.
